The first season, dubbed "Season of the Malignant," introduces a relatively short base storyline. The storyline primarily serves to provide context for the central mechanic of farming Malignant Hearts and socketing them into gear for bonus powers. Unlike other games, the storyline is not time-gated, meaning players are not required to return each week to unlock new story beats.

The seasonal model in Diablo 4 is designed to offer a fresh start for all players, with everyone beginning on an equal playing field. This allows players to experiment with new classes or builds. One of the significant advantages of Diablo 4's seasons is that players do not lose their seasonal characters at the end of the season. This means that players can return to their characters at any time, even after the season ends, in the eternal realm.

This approach reflects the Diablo 4 team's philosophy of not focusing on never-ending engagement, unlike other live games. In a recent developer livestream, Diablo's Joe Piepiora emphasized that it's okay for players to take a break from the game and return when there's new content they want to play.
